Dundee United may well be unique in the fact that one of their former players won an Oscar.
Neil Paterson played for The Terrors in the period just prior to the Second World War, being captain in season 1936-37.
He was an inside left and also turned out for the now defunct Leith Athletic.
During his time with United, he netted nine times in 26 appearances and remained amateur during his entire professional career.
However, Neil was also a talented wordsmith.
The Greenock-born Edinburgh University graduate became a writer after hanging up his football boots.
After a career as a sports journalist with DC Thomson and, following a spell as a novelist, he adapted his own short story The Kidnappers for the cinema.
Released in 1953 and starring Duncan Macrae and Jean Anderson, the film was a big hit and the juvenile leads Jon Whiteley and Vincent Winter won honorary juvenile Oscars.
However, Neil, who won the Atlantic Award for Literature in 1946, was to go on and win an Oscar himself.
He penned a number of screenplays, including the Oscar-winning script for Room at the Top in 1959, adapted from the novel by John Braine.
Neil continued to be a big figure in the film industry, serving as governor for the British Film Institute, National Film School and the Arts Council of Great Britain and as an executive for Grampian Television.
He passed away, aged 80, in Crieff.
