Mates met up again at boxing bout

Ryan McInnes has played for that many junior and amateur clubs in Dundee that this column would not have enough space to list them.

However, he always greets me with a smile and a word, and likes to comment on Blether with Brown articles.

His latest views are centred around the Dundee Primary Schoolboys photo which appeared on February 18.

I highlighted former Dundee United pair Gary Bollan and Christian Dailly as two players who went on to make a name for themselves in the senior game or made their mark locally.

I also asked if any others made that step up, and Ryan (pictured below in his Logie Harp days) was happy to assist.

“Regarding did any other boys play senior, a friend of mine in the photo was Dave Fisher, who signed professional forms with Dundee FC.

“Richie Vannet was professional with Brechin City, while John Lindsay was on the books of Dundee United and Arbroath.

“Marc Hutton was with me at East Craigie.

“Billy Mitchell and Jimmy Byrne had successful junior careers.

“Billy’s family may be more well known as they are still heavily involved with Midlands AFA side SS Peter and Paul and have been for many a decade.

“Funnily enough, I actually bumped into Richie Vannet in 1994 when I was boxing for Scotland against Wales in Camelon Miners Club.

“He was playing for Camelon juniors at the time.

“Small world!”

On another note, Ryan is helping to organise a 15-year reunion game for Stobswell Bar AFC.

This goes ahead on Friday at DISC (5.30pm KO) and their opponents are old adversaries Macalpine AFC.
