It’s 10 years this month since former Scotland manager Ally MacLeod passed away, aged 72, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Older readers will remember the amazing feeling of optimism leading up to the 1978 World Cup Finals in Argentina, and then the dejection of a humiliating campaign in South America.
It seemed to be laugh-a-minute with Ally prior to leaving for the finals and none more so when a cardboard cut-out of pop superstar Rod Stewart completed the line-up when Ally MacLeod (seated left) and members of Scotland’s World Cup squad visited a London recording studio to record the backing for their official World Cup song, which was sung by Rod.
From left Willie Donachie, Martin Buchan, Ally MacLeod (seated), Joe Jordan, Sandy Jardine, Bruce Rioch (seated), Derek Johnstone, Asa Hartford and John Blackley.
