Canada’s Rob Boag responded to a recent photo sent in by W Dick, of Blairgowrie.
Mr Dick had originally asked for any information regarding a picture.
“That was a great picture of Alyth Thistle FC (BwB, December 13),” said Rob, a regular contributor to this column. It could be the oldest picture ever published in BwB.
“Winning the Strathmore League Championship in 1902 means Alyth Thistle FC played in the Scottish Amateur Football League, later changed to the Scottish Amateur Football Association SAFA.
“In 1914, as did all amateur football teams, Alyth Thistle FC would have disbanded because of the First World War.
“Also the team being victors of the Evening Telegraph Cup is interesting.
“In 1901, John Leng, the owner of the Evening Telegraph, donated trophies under his newspaper’s name to local amateur sports.
“It’s possible that Alyth Thistle were the first club to win the Evening Telegraph Cup.
“If not, they would be the second team to win this trophy.
“I came across a picture of the 1929 Dundee Violet Scottish Cup team.
“It’s not a good picture and doesn’t provide a line-up but you can make out 11 players sardined in by 20 suits!
“On the Dundee Violet website, it lists an N Farquhar as the club chairman.
“If this is N Farquhar, a former resident of Rochester, New York, then I send my salutations, and sincerely wish he is in good health and in good spirits.”
