Blethert with Brown: Goalie Mike longest-serving ‘Stateside’ Scot and was team-mate of George Best

Some months ago, this column made a plea, on behalf of Dundee FC, to try to locate former players.

The Dens Park club had a couple of functions planned and wanted to invite some of them along.

Donald Gellatly responded: “As far as I’m aware, Billy Semple stayed in Hong Kong after his football career ended. A simple Google search for Semple suggests where his son Scott can be found.

“George Stewart is an Edinburgh boy and a massive Hibs fan, so the club secretary at Easter Road could well have his address.

“Again, a quick Google search flags up information. A key line reads: ‘Now 64, Stewart lives in the village of Flockton, near Wakefield, West Yorkshire’.

“John Gray was from Lanarkshire and played for Hamilton Accies after leaving Dundee.

“Unfortunately, his name well and truly disappeared from all known football records thereafter.

“After spending just one season in Florida, Mike Hewitt joined San Jose, where he remained until 1982 before ending his playing career with Montreal in 1983, making him the longest serving ‘State-side’ Scot and a team-mate of George Best.

“Mike remained in the San Jose area following his retirement and developed a successful career as a mortgage broker.

“Mike is currently Phoenix FC Wolves goalkeeper coach (they have a website).

“Alex Pringle’s last game in a Dark Blue shirt came in a Dryburgh Cup win over Queen of the South in July 1974.

“He was transferred to Clyde shortly afterwards.

“Pringle subsequently moved to the USA, where he opened a sports bar.”

Bobby McMahon, from Canada, also contributed to tracking down of some of the players.

“I read that Dundee FC was looking to track down Alex Pringle and Mike Hewitt of the 73 League Cup-winning squad,” opened Bob, formerly of Tayport Amateurs FC and now working with Fox Sports.

“I put out an APB tweet and got back a couple of responses.

“The author of ‘The Summer of 67’ book Ian Thomson says that Alex Pringle was coaching in Florida the last he heard.

“Ian suggested that the NASL club Tampa Bay Rowdies might be a contact for him.

“Mike Hewitt attended a San Jose Earthquakes alumni dinner a couple of years ago and my contact thought that the MLS San Jose Earthquakes are likely to have a way of reaching him.”
