Continuing the Lochee Harp theme of recent months is former Beechwood Park star Jimmy Ashwood.
“If you have space in your column, can you give a wee shout to the Lochee Harp players from the year 1968 who beat Kirkintilloch Rob Roy in the Scottish Cup?” asked Jimmy.
“Rob Roy were very strong favourites for the cup that year and we beat them away from home after a draw at Beechwood.
“My wife’s family was from Kirkie and her uncle was president of the Glasgow club. I had bragging rights for years after that result.
“It was 2-2 at Beechwood in the first game and we beat them 4-3 at Adamslie in the replay after being 3-1 down with 20 minutes to go.
“I managed a goal in the first game and notched a double in the replay.
“This got me sine die from the family, banning me from going back to Kirkie,” laughed Jimmy.
He continued: “However, as things went, we blew the semi-final against one of the poorer sides we met that year.
“It’s a funny old game.”
Harp lost that Scottish Cup semi-final 3-2 to Johnstone Burgh, with the game played at Shawfield Stadium, then home to Clyde FC.
Johnstone went on to beat Glenrothes in the final.
Jimmy’s sure the Harp line-up was the same for both games (quarter-final and semi), and gives it in the old 2-3-5 formation Harry Bollan; Billy Finlayson, Tam Clink; Drummond Robertson, Jim Fairbairn, Harry Grieve; Jimmy Ashwood, Norrie Watson, John Markie, Arthur Finn, Brian Alderson.
