Blether with Brown: Phew! A near thing for Forfar manager Allan

Blether with Brown: Phew! A near thing for Forfar manager Allan

Tayport’s Abby Oswald thought this photo would be of interest to BwB readers.

And I’m sure he is correct.

“The picture is of the ‘Old Crocks’ team which took part during Tayport FC’s international tournament in 1983,” said Abby, who, of course, is well-known as the driving force behind the successful north-east Fife club.

The photo is riddled with former team-mates and acquaintances of mine.

Followers of Dundee United in the 1960s will instantly recognise Jim Henry.

Jim came straight out of boys football and into the United first team and starred for the Tannadice club for many seasons.

His good form saw him transferred to Aberdeen, then it was off to America for stints with Texas side San Antonio Thunder and also in Honolulu with Team Hawaii.

On his return to these shores, he finished his career with Forfar Athletic.

Peter Castle was my team-mate at Butterburn Youth Club and Lochee Boys Club, while Davie Bruce was also at Butterburn and is a regular contributor to this column.

I’ve had a few nights out with Ronnie Laing (long time ago, mind!) and it was a pleasure to be in the company of Dennis Gillespie when he was in the later stages of his career with Brechin City.

Some of his Glebe Park team-mates were friends of mine and we used to meet up for a drink after games.

Dennis a legendary player at Tannadice was a perfect gentleman, who went on to become a pivotal figure in the emergence of Fairmuir Boys Club.

Allan Kennedy had the opportunity to sign me when he was manager of Forfar Athletic.

He declined and it was probably one of his better decisions!

Billy McGann was briefly my team-mate at East Fife, then again at Broughty Athletic juniors a few years down the line.

Finally, Bobby Waddell, who I bumped into just recently in the Matalan car park in Dundee.

As I’ve said before, Bobby was the senior professional at Bayview when I arrived and he went out of his way to make you feel at ease.

I’ve met him again many times since at various Dundee FC functions.

And he never tires of reminding me that he was part of the Tayport AFC management team which masterminded the Midlands AFA Gray Trophy Final victory over my Auchterhouse side in the late 1970s.
