Dougie Dougan emailed with a “little query from a 22-year-old who’s trying to figure out the history of the local junior football clubs”.
He continued: “I remember a team called Elmwood ground-sharing with East Craigie.
“My query, though, is simple.
“Did Elmwood play on the pitch behind the old Norman Fairweather Motors garage? Plus, what were the reasons for them ground-sharing with East Craigie?
“Other thing is, what was the pitch called and who owns it these days?”
Below is an aerial view of the two football grounds in Old Craigie Road.
The bottom pitch is Craigie Park, home of East Craigie, with whom Elmwood shared.
The top pitch is East End Park, which is situated behind the Fairweather garage.
Stobswell juniors played on it for many decades before they folded.
Midlands amateur club NCR AFC then stepped in and took control of the lease.
NCR were then forced to move by the council a couple of years ago as the site was earmarked, I think, as an extension for Eastern Cemetery.
NCR moved to Caird Park Stadium, where they still are.
The reason for Elmwood sharing with the Shipbuilders was simple in that they were homeless.
As a young boy in the 1950s and 60s, I remember going to see them play home games at Midmill Park, which is now Fairfield Park.
I also remember that, at least on two occasions, the pavilion at Midmill was set on fire by vandals.
