Blether with Brown: Junior fans scraped cash together to smash records

Rob Boag reckons Jim Finlayson makes a fair point when he states that Dundee Violet should be the nominated as the greatest team ever to play in Dundee Junior Football history.

Rob had reckoned a Harp outfit from times gone by were the best junior team to come out of the city.

Current Violet president Jim offered that surely the Pansies side which won the Scottish Cup must be the best.

“Yes, Violet won the Scottish Cup, and a contentious cup final it was,” said Rob, formerly of Dundee and now living in Canada.

Rob then produced a rundown of events.

“Violet reached the Scottish Cup final in 1929, where their opponents were Denny Hibs,” he said.

“The game was played at Tynecastle, Violet winning 2-0.

“Immediately after the final whistle, Denny lodged a protest, stating that Violet had a player in their line-up who was signed with Dundee FC.

“This turned out to be true, and the SJFA rescheduled the final for the following week, again at Tynecastle, with the final score a 2-2 draw.

“As there was no penalty shoot-out at that time, the SJFA rescheduled the game a second time, this time to be played at Dens Park, with the Pansies running out 4-0 winners.

“Once again, however, Denny lodged a protest against another Violet player, who they said was also signed for Dundee FC.

“By this time, the SJFA had had enough of Denny’s whinging and presented the Scottish Cup to Violet.

“I wonder if Jim has a photo of this winning Violet Scottish Cup team. It would be great to see it included in BwB’s outstanding collection of Dundee sports photographs.

“My naming the 1934 Lochee Harp side as the greatest team to ever play in Dundee junior football is based on the following considerations.

“Lochee Harp, in the 1933-34 season, had more Scottish internationals in its line-up than any other Dundee junior side before or since that date.

“They also had the most prolific goal scorer in the history of Dundee junior football Dave Forbes who is named in SJFA’s records as a player for Harp who scored the most goals in any given Scottish junior game.

“But it is the fans, the supporters, who, at the depth of the Depression, scraped their pennies together and smashed Scottish attendance records at junior football games on junior grounds to watch this Harp team play.

“Records that still stand and will probably never be broken.

“Attendances that are engraved into the history books of the Scottish Juniors.

“It is a testament to those supporters that make the 1933-34 Lochee Harp side, in my view, the greatest team to ever play in the 127-year history of Dundee junior football.”
