The St Clement’s photo which first appeared on August 9 continues to provoke debate as more and more players in the team are recognised and fondly remembered.
Lochee’s Frank Jordan thinks highly in the latter bracket of Jim ‘Peem’ Kennedy.
“I had the pleasure of working with Peem Kennedy on the NCR auto section, where he was a job leader,” said Frank.
“And, later, I got to know his two sons, Stuart and Scott, who joined the NCR swimming and water polo club. Scott took to swimming and water polo while Stuart eventually preferred football.
“Peem was a very good swimmer and, at the NCR club galas, there was a 4×25-yard inter-section relay.
“Along with Bert Downie, Forry Madden and myself, Peem won the event and was presented with the Stan Hughes medal.
“Peem was also a piper in the NCR band and his wife Violet and family and my wife Maureen and family socialised a lot and went on holiday together.
“My biggest disappointment was that I never managed to get to Peem’s funeral as I was in Malta with the Menzieshill HS swimming team when Maureen phoned and toldme that he’d collapsed and died collecting his Sporting Post from his local newsagent.”
My former Butterburn YC clubmate Bryn Williams also saw a family connection in the photo.
“A couple of years ago, you ran an article about my grandfather Jim Kennedy,” said Bryn, a striker who went on to play for Forfar Athletic.
“At that time, I think you published an old framed photo.
“The team was based in Dundee and competed in the Half Holiday League.
“He was the uncle of all the Kennedy brothers highlighted in the St Clement’s article on September 20.”
Bryn, who is, perhaps, better known for his cycle shop business Nicholson’s, commented: “Catherine McCartney and John Sime, who were also mentioned in the articles, are my second cousins.
“My grandfather lived in the Nethergate. A heck of a lot of Kennedys played football!”
Olwen Miller-Kelly thinks she may have found relatives in these articles.
“Please forward my email address (oljo2013@gmail.com) to Moira Kennedy and Catherine McCartney.
“I do believe there is a strong chance the guys mentioned in the photo are my mother’s cousins.”
Referring to the St Clement’s photo, Mary McKay recognised a number of faces, and said: “George de Gernier was my dad and William was my grandad.
“Willie Heron was my dad’s cousin and Bob Mudie was my dad’s brother-in-law.
“He was married to my dad’s sister.
“Tam Smith was a good friend of my dad.
“It is just great to see all these old photos in the paper.”
