George Furey has finally got around to sending in a particular photo to BwB.
“I have been meaning to send in this Club Romano picture for ages as this was a time when an Italian team needed the help of a bunch of Scottish schoolboys,” said George, well-known in the local amateur scene in the 1970s/80s.
“What I remember of this picture is that it was taken before a game against Charleston Celtic and it was the final of the Romano Cup, which was put up by the local Italian community.
“I think we were all about 14-15-years-old at the time.
“I hope your readers may help to identify the time this was played.
“I remember most of the names of the guys in the picture and, when I look back at it, I see a lot of quality players in that side.
“Players in the photo (back, from left) are Andy Hutton, George Furey, Mike Esposito, Charlie Morgan, John Ross, Walter Bojczuk, Alec Rice.
“Front Billy (surname unknown), Brian Kenyon, George Morris, Jim McCann, Patrick Craig, Duncan Toshney and Gerald Smith.
“I remember we won the game against a very good side.
“I recall John Reilly and Dougie Berry playing for them.
“In fact, it was mostly a St John’s High School select against a mostly St Michael’s Secondary select and friends.
“The ‘Mikeys’ team at that time was a strong side but never did well in the schools league.
“That was a tough league as Lawside had a very strong side.
“There was also St John’s and Linlathen Secondary, who, at that time, had a strong side with a certain Derek Johnstone playing. George Morris, Jim McCann and Alec Rice went on to play senior football, as did Wattie Bojczuk.
“A lot of these players are now resident all over the world and I hope this story and picture finds them well and happy.”
