I was speaking to a Dundee fan recently, who told me he is going to the Dundee FC 40th anniversary dinner of their League Cup win over Celtic in 1973.
The event takes place at the Invercarse Hotel on Sunday, December 15.
He also got on to the subject of Tommy Gemmell, who was part of that side and later went on to become manager at Dens.
He was full of praise for the Lisbon Lion, who won the European Cup with Celtic in 1967, as “he went back to his roots to help run a youth team in the city” during his time at Dens.
I had to remind him that it wasn’t a Dundee team he ran at that time but a Perthshire side, Errol Rovers.
Under manager Ian Redford (senior) and Tommy’s tutelage, they were quite successful and produced several players who went on to make a name for themselves in the senior game.
In fact, five of their players did well in the senior ranks.
Gary Murray was a great servant to Montrose, won a big move to Hibs and also played for Forfar.
Cousins Ian and Gavin Redford both turned out for Dundee and St Johnstone, with Ian also gracing Dundee United, Rangers and Ipswich Town.
Russell Cosgrove was a stalwart defender with Arbroath.
However, it was Raymond Stewart who just edged out Ian as the one who had had the most illustrious career.
Raymond went on to play 10 times for Scotland, and his clubs included Dundee United, West Ham, St Johnstone and Stirling Albion.
He also served Stirling Albion, Livingston and Forfar as manager, as well as being a coach with St Johnstone.
Raymond recalls his Errol Rovers days with relish and, in particular, his time there in 1975.
“I was not only captain of Errol Rovers then but also the Scotland schoolboy team which beat England at Wembley that year.
“Errol were not only successful in the local league but nationally, too, where we always did well, beating several top west of Scotland clubs.
“I still see a number of the lads including Gary Murray, who is now a taxi driver in Dundee.
“Kenny Johnstone lives in the Perth area, and there’s also Mike Williamson, who I believe works for Perth and Kinross Council, and the two Redfords.
“We often have a chat about those glory days with Errol Rovers.”
I’ve managed to find a photo of Tommy’s time with the club, and it is the U/15 team from 1975.
