Gerry Trayner responded to the plea about info on Jock Paterson, as requested by Stuart Watt (BwB, August 23).
“I used to work with Jock in the council roads department in the late 1940s and early 1950s,” said Gerry (73), of Americanmuir Road, Dundee.
“I was just starting out and he was coming near to retiral age.
“He used to tell me tales of his time in football.
“I think he represented Scotland at some level against England.
“He was a centre-forward and was quite a big guy but was also called upon to play centre-half when required.
“He said also that Scotland’s international players were paid £2 more than the English at that time and they were told to keep it quiet or it might cause a stushie among the English players.
“He may also have played for Leicester as, when they were in a cup final around that time, he wrote to the club for tickets and they sent him two.
“After he retired, he was going on a trip to Canada to visit a relative and wanted to wear his SFA blazer.
“He asked the SFA for a pin badge but they refused to give him one. I think he eventually got one from Doug Cowie.
“I recall he stayed in the Linlathen area, maybe Fountainbleau Drive.”
Another reader texted me anonymously, saying: “Did Jock Paterson not play for Dundee at the same time as Troupy?”
