Tele columnist John Letford MBE puts forward his views in this paper every Thursday.
In our September 5 issue, John an ex-Labour councillor and a former Lord Provost of this city gave his views on several aspects of current football. That evening, while enjoying a minor sarsaparilla in my local, one pundit’s comments caught my ear: “John Letford? Whit dis he ken aboot fitba?”
Reasoning, I offered that John had probably forgotten more about the beautiful game than this particular gentleman could hope to gain in several lifetimes.
He was also astonished to hear my further comments that John was, indeed, a mega-successful manager and coach of various youth teams for a spell spanning the 1960s to early 80s.
Co-incidentally, his son Billy had been speaking to me around this time about his father and handed in a scrapbook of John’s time with youth football teams.
Over the coming weeks, I’ll share some of them with you.
