“Well done Frank Jordan for highlighting two great line-ups from the Benvie Road/Polepark area,” was the opening line from Rob Boag.
Canadian reader Rob, formerly of Dundee, was referring to the article on July 26.
Despite being away from these shores for a number of decades, Rob is a great evangelist of all things Dundee, and continued: “I knew lads from both teams who went to the Joeys and the Johnies (St Joseph’s PS and St John’s HS).
“I can give a couple of wee corrections regarding a couple of names, though.
“The goalie from the Lawrence Street side (my money would be on that team every day) wasn’t Jimmy (Galligan), it was Andy, who was also a Joeys’ goalie, and it was Francie O’Connor from the St Mary’s school football team.
“I’d be surprised if Albert Brannan’s brother Jackie didn’t also turn out for the Lawrence Street side.
“Albert was a classy heads-up player who was a tradesman with British Railways a major employer in Dundee, in fact a major employer throughout the UK in the 1950s.
“British Railways had an outstanding history of football teams, and I’m pretty sure in a British Railways international Albert was selected for a Scotland side against England.
“Frank’s great story about the Blythe Mill pitch and its talented players is part of Dundee’s sports and social history and is now on record in the BwB time capsule!”
