When searching for info on the Urquhart Cup, I did know there is an Urquhart Trophy played for at schools level in Dundee.
And, as usual, for anything to do with schools football, I forwarded a request for information to Grenville Dawson, our local schools football guru and Tele correspondent.
“Yes, the Urquhart Trophy is a Dundee Schools cup,” he confirmed.
“It is played for by the U/14 school teams and it is the first game played when we have our double-header of secondary finals at Dundee FC’s Dens Park.
“I have no idea who donated it or why but it was first played in season 1952-53 and Harris Academy won it.
“It was played for next in 1957 and, since then, it has been played for almost every year apart from the wee spell at the end of the 80s because of the teachers’ action at that time.
“It has been played for every year now since 1990.
“The trophy has been sponsored by the Dee Club for as long as I’ve known, and the final has always been at Dens Park as far as I know (apart from when there was work on the new stands at Dens in the 90s, when we played once at St Joseph’s Fairfield Park).
“I can only assume the original Mr Urquhart must have had strong links with Dundee FC, as it has always been a trophy to be played at Dens.
“The current holders are Morgan Academy.”
