Blether with Brown: Dauntless’ Dave played under legendary Harvey

Johnshaven Dauntless, the quaintly-named team which was featured on July 26, was remembered by David Ritchie, of Glamis Road, Dundee.

David actually played for Dauntless, and said: “I played for Montrose Vics under the legendary Harvey Nicholls before moving to play for Dauntless.

“I really don’t know how they came about their name but we didn’t win many matches in my time with them.”

Aberdeen-born David, who lived in ‘Jonner’ for a while, also served in the Merchant Navy, and continued: “The team folded in 1958, mainly because of lack of interest.

“One player who did play for Dauntless was Jimmy Stephen, who went on to captain Scotland during the war years.”

League folded about 1954

“In 1947, I played for Bervie United in the Kincardine Junior League,” said Rolly Valentine (jean_valentine@sky.com).

“I played against Johnshaven Dauntless.

“Other teams making up the league included Gourdon Selbie, St Cyrus, Luthermuir, St Laurence and Bervie.

“I think the league folded about 1954.”

Now Johnshaven Athletic

Coincidentally, David’s nephew Neil Ritchie also responded on behalf of his father Gerald, of Elmwood Road in Dundee.

“My father and I come from Johnshaven originally,” said Neil, of Inchture.

“Even though he is in his 80s, he clearly remembers coming through to Dundee to see Dauntless play Violet and East Craigie in Scottish Cup ties in the late 1940s.

“Dauntless drew 1-1 with the Shipbuilders and took them back for a replay. Craigie, though, won the second game 3-0.”

Neil was also able to bring the Dauntless story right up to date.

“They are now called Johnshaven Athletic,” he revealed.

“They are currently playing in the Aberdeen Amateur Football Association Division 1E, and sitting fourth out of 14 teams.”

Kincardine Junior league team

Yet another Ritchie this time Willie came on with his view but it’s unclear whether he is related to the others of that surname.

“I played for RAF Edzell in the 1950s in the then-Kincardine Junior League and Dauntless were in that league,” said Willie.

“I was on Dundee North End’s books at the time, having signed for the Dokens from Ashdale along with Peter McGrath, Dale’s right-winger who later signed for Dundee.

“We were joined in the RAF team by another North Ender, Billy Boyle, who went on to play for Hibs, if I recall.

“We were somehow given special permits to play for the RAF side when required.

“I remember Dauntless being a tough side and they played on a pitch near the water.

“Other teams in the league were Gourdon Selbie, Auchenblae, Laurencekirk and Marykirk.

“I always remember being given hard matches at these places and, equally, the fine hospitality afforded us at the post-match get-together.

“Your article brought back some good memories.”
