Blether with Brown: Jimmy was Johnshaven’s most-famous player

Clark Simpson, whose book ‘The Dauntless: Johnshaven’s Unique Football Team’ instigated these replies, also responded.

“We no longer get the Evening Telegraph up our way, and a fellow-sufferer at Montrose FC’s Links Park told me of the BwB article,” said Clark.

Much of what Clark gave is the same as above.

However, he continued: “Junior side Johnshaven Dauntless folded in 1958.

“In 1971, it reformed as an amateur team playing in the Fettercairn and District Summer League, which was a strong and quite good quality league involving a number of former juniors.

“Apart from a short break in the 1980s, Dauntless continued as members of the league until 2006 when the league folded although the Dauntless were up and ready to go.

“The most famous Dauntless player was Jimmy Stephen.

“Jimmy played for Portsmouth in their glory days post-war, and he captained Scotland against Wales in 1946.

“Jimmy, who retained a great interest in football, sadly died in November last year aged 90.

“I am intrigued as to how you knew that David Simpson was my father because I didn’t mention that in the book.

“The Dauntless is, indeed, unique, although, unfortunately, nobody has been able to explain now the team got its name.”
