Blether with Brown: Arbroath Vics’ brilliant George Best day is rescued from Betamax!

Arbroath’s Russell Ruxton (63) fairly modernised the Dauntless connection when he revealed he played against them in 1976.

“I worked in Wm Low’s in Montrose at the time, on the butcher’s counter,” opened Russell, who is now well-known in local football circles as president of Arbroath Vics Junior FC.

“John Coull worked in that department with me and he played for Montrose Vics in a very successful summer league in the area and it wasn’t long before he took me up for a game.

“One of the opposing teams was Johnshaven Dauntless, with others I remember being Forgan, Fettercairn, Stonehaven, Gourdon and Auchenblae.

“John still stays in Montrose and also played later on for Arbroath Vics.”

Changing the subject, Russell continued: “On another theme, John’s time at Vics was the same era as our famous game with George Best.

“What an occasion that was.

“John was in the same Vics team as Northern Ireland and Manchester United legend Best which beat an Arbroath XI 3-2 at Gayfield.

“The whole day was wonderful and Best’s girlfriend Mary Stavin was there.

“She was a former Miss World and was absolutely stunning.

“I still have the game on record as it was taped… on Betamax!

“However, I’ve recently had it transferred to a CD.”
