Quite a number of readers made comment about Alex Bruce’s assessment of Dave Forbes (BwB, July 5).
Dundonian Rob Boag was among them.
He opened: “Born in a Tipperary garret, it’s always a delight to read your column, with stories about Lochee Harp and their players from that famed age of Dundee junior football.
“I was intrigued to read of Alec Bruce’s interest in Dave Forbes goal-scoring prowess of more than 100 goals with North End.
“I don’t know if this incredible feat is acknowledged by the SJFA but what I do know is that Dave Forbes and Lochee Harp are officially recognised by the SJFA as the team where one individual player scored a record amount of goals in any Scottish Junior game.”
Rob, from his home in Canada, went on to describe the match details.
“The match was Harp v Dundee Celtic on Saturday, March 28, 1936, with the final score Harp 15 Dundee Celtic 2.
“Forbes scored 12 goals six in each half.
“An SJFA record for Dave Forbes, and another SJFA record for the Harp and Dundee.
“If Dave Forbes scored goals for fun, I think we can all agree that opposing goalkeepers didn’t share his sense of humour.”
Rob, who subscribes to the Tele from his current home in Canada, continued: “After reading BwB, I read through the rest of that particular Friday’s Tele.
“Elsewhere, there was an announcement on Dundee’s ambitious and admirable project to become the UK’s City of Culture.
“In the article was a list of impressive Dundee celebrities from academia, media, stage and screen, along with regular folks and volunteers enlisted to promote the cause.
“However, there did not seem to be a sports celebrity or volunteer with a sports background.
“Sport is an inherent part of a city or country’s heritage and culture.
“BwB has now evolved into a time capsule for sports and culture, exceptional photographs from up to 100 years ago.
“The descriptive stories provide a portal into Dundee life, into Dundee’s social and cultural history over the 20th and into this century.
“The London 2012 Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies illustrated a magical melding between culture and sport.
“Dundee, a city with a vibrant sports history and more than a few personalities, doesn’t seem have a major sport representative participating in the City of Culture project.
“What am I missing?”
