Recently enjoying a refreshing ‘sarsaparilla’ at the Ship Inn, Broughty Ferry, in the company of my good lady, four gentlemen joined us at the table.
All four were Canadian residents on a golf holiday in Scotland.
We soon started chatting and it turned out that just one was an actual Canadian.
The other three were Scots one a Dundonian and the other two from Tranent and Campeltown all three leaving these shores in the mid-1970s.
The Dundonian was Jim Curran, who told me he was the brother of the late Chris, who, it turns out, was my neighbour for several years in Monifieth Road, Broughty Ferry.
Reminiscing, Jim said he played junior football for quite a while before emigrating, mainly with Osborne.
Team-mates’ names he shared with me were Charlie Love, Norrie Thain and Billy Cooper.
I tried to find a Bourners team photo in our files with all four players in it but could not.
However, I’ve published one (below) from 1968-69 with Jim’s three mentioned team-mates lining up.
Jim (jwcurran@shaw.ca) said it was OK to put out his email address as he would love to hear from the aforementioned trio and anyone else he played with at East End Park.
As the night wore on, the subject soon turned to golf and, as my Wednesday afternoon buddies at Carnoustie will testify, I haven’t quite mastered the art.
As for a hole-in-one, I’ve never came near one in over 30 years of trying.
Jim, however, was able to boast no fewer than 10 holes-in-one!
Jeezy peeps!
