The same Dundee-AC Milan celebration night, which prompted the BwB story on June 21 about ex-Dens Parker Alex Stuart, was also attended by other Dundee FC European Cup squad players Bobby Wishart, Pat Liney, Bobby Waddell, Ian Ure and George Ryden.
Most gave their views of the competition to those in attendance on the night and some of the revelations by the players were staggering.
Not least the threadbare team squads which travelled to the away European ties against Cologne, Sporting Lisbon, Anderlecht and AC Milan.
“I think we travelled to these games with just 13 players,” said Ayrshire-based Ian, who was capped for Scotland and also played for Arsenal and Manchester United.
“We certainly didn’t take a deputy goalkeeper and also didn’t take our physiotherapist Lawrie Smith.
“It was just manager Bob Shankly, his coach/trainer Sammy Kean, a couple of directors and a small squad of players.”
I asked Ian what he thought might have happened if, say, goalkeeper Bert Slater was injured or took ill prior to the game.
“Och, Andy Penman would have just donned the yellow jersey and gone in goal,” he nonchalantly replied.
“We really didn’t think anything of it at the time, or that it was such a big deal.
“Looking back, though, I suppose it is quite unbelievable.”
Ian concluded: “I’m still convinced to this day that, given a fair rub of the green from the referees in both semi-final games against AC, we could have made the final.
“They were a good team but we were definitely better than them.
“If we had gone to Wembley for the 1963 final, we would DEFINITELY have beaten Benfica of that I am sure!”
