Jim Murdoch tells me he used to follow Raith Rovers home and away and started going to see the Stark’s Park side a few years after the team recorded a rather special victory.
“From 1958 to 1960, I used to go to Raith games on a supporters bus, leaving from Crail,” revealed Jim.
“It was then that I was informed that Rovers had a great side a couple of years previously and, indeed, beat the mighty Rangers 5-1 at Stark’s Park.”
Jim, of Argyle Court, St Andrews, continued: “I can remember players such as right-half Andy Young, centre-half and captain Willie McNaught, left-half Andy Leigh, and forwards such as Jimmy McEwan, Benny Kelly, Ernie Copland, Jackie Williamson and John Urquhart.
“Can’t, though, recall the goalkeeper and the full-backs.”
A delve into our files reveal that Raith Rovers beat Rangers 5-1 at Stark’s Park on December 8, 1956, with goals from Copland (2), Urquhart (2) and Kelly.
Rangers’ sole counter came from Simpson.
Raith Rovers Stewart; Polland, Bain; Young, McNaught, Leigh; McEwan, Kelly, Copland, Williamson, Urquhart.

To complete the full names of the victorious Raith team, the goalie was George Stewart and the left-back Ian Bain.
