Blether with Brown: Doubtless Dauntless will trigger memories

In the journal of quaint or strange football team names, Johnshaven Dauntless would surely have a chapter all to themselves.

Brian Smith knew of their existence but he had to dig deep with a bit of research to convince one of his friends of the Dauntless existence.

“One of my friends said he played against a team called Johnshaven Dauntless,” said Brian, of Glenogil Terrace, Forfar.

“Another had doubts as he had never heard of them.

“I did some research and came up with some information about their existence.

“It would be interesting to know if any BwB readers have played against or even heard of them.”

I have to admit Dauntless is a new name to me but research of my own confirms their existence.

Indeed, Johnshaven football enthusiast Clark Simpson has put together a book ‘The Dauntless: Johnshaven’s Unique Football Team’.

The book highlights the ups and downs of the village’s junior team in the early part of the 20th century.

They were founded in 1909 and the club’s heyday was in the 1920s when they won the league twice.

In that spell, they also picked up the Dawson Cup five times.

Clark and his father David each made just under 100 appearances for the team.

I’m told they may even still be in existence in an amateur league.
