Blether with Brown: After the game, a few beers in Sandy’s

Ron Gowans recently came across a photo from the 1970s of his team St Columba’s BC.

“We played in the Juvenile league then and remember some tough matches against Fairfield, Fintry CC, etc,” he recalled.

“John Ross Letford was our manager, assisted by the late Colin Davidson and I have fond memories of playing on Campie 6.

“After the game, it was back to Sandy’s in Lochee for a few beers. We would then jump on the No 26 bus into town to the Hansom Cab.

“I’m from Charleston originally, though have been in exile in the south of England in Torquay since 1980.

“I really enjoy Blether with Broon, and love reading all the names from the past.”

Ron reckons this St Columba’s team photo was taken around 1975-77. Back row (from left) S Jackson, J Bell, Ginger, B Letford, J Letford, J Fairweather, J Devine. Front row R Gowans, G Kerrigan, B Rice, B Flynn, D Gall, I Ogilvie.

“Ginger” was obviously this player’s nickname. Can anyone reveal his identity?

Of the other players, there’s quite a few names there who have gone on to make their mark in local juniors and amateurs.

None more so than goalscorer supreme Brian Flynn, who scored goals by the barrowload for Lochee United.

I recently spoke to Brian at a youth game at Claypotts. I had to do a double take when Brian first approached me as I hadn’t spoken to him for some years.

It’s safe to say he is on the same diet as me!
