I recently met local referee Frankie Campbell at a girls football game and remarked I hadn’t heard from him for quite a while.
Frankie is always good for a nostalgic tale and he was soon on with another.
Frankie opened: “As you remarked, I haven’t been in touch for a while but I thought I’d send you a picture of me out with an old friend recently.
“I was with George Forbes and his missus, who were over from Australia.
“George, you may remember, was in the same St Pius team as me, which featured recently in BwB.
“When we went to Lawside Academy, we both failed to get in the team in first year but, due to a tactic George suggested of turning up every week with our boots, we managed to force our way into the team in time for the Scottish Cup win.
“Joe Hart, the manager, played George as striker (centre-forward to me and you) not because of his eye for a goal but because his all-action style caused havoc in defences which created opportunities for the real goalscorers like Davie Henderson and Davie Brogan.
“After leaving school, George went to Edinburgh University and signed for Forfar Athletic.
“On leaving University, he signed for Cowdenbeath. After short spells at Lochee United, Osborne and another junior team he can’t remember, he moved to Melbourne with wife Susan.
“Susan was formerly Susan Gall, of Balunie Drive in Douglas, George coming from along the road in Ballindean Crescent.
“In Australia, the late Joe Tront fixed him up with Knox City.
“George and Susan were back in Dundee for a family wedding, so that gave us a chance to catch up.”
