Blether with Brown: Fintry football winners also good at volleyball

Graham Snaith was recently looking through some old photos and cuttings and came across this old photo of Fintry Primary School from, he reckons, 1973.

“It was a very successful time for the school team,” recalled Graham (gsnaith@sky.com).

“I think we won the league (section D) and the Burgess Cup double two years on the trot and also the Junior Sports Cup.

“As you can see from the picture, we had a few players who went on to become very well-known names in the game.”

These included Charlie Adam (sadly, no longer with us), who played for several senior clubs including Partick Thistle and Dundee United, and John Reilly, who, of course, was part of Dundee United’s league-winning squad 10 years on in 1983.

David Johnstone is brother of Rangers legend Derek, and most of the others went on to have good junior and amateur football careers.

Graham continued: “I have now lived in England for 40 years but still get up to Dundee now and again to see family and friends.

“I am the son of Jimmy Snaith, who was the co-founder of Logie Harp, and they are sometimes mentioned in your BwB column.

“Dad was invited up for their 50th anniversary as a special guest not so long ago.

“Another interesting point is that the teacher who ran the football team at the time was, if I recall correctly, Mr Leighton.

“He was a Scottish international at volleyball! A sport not mentioned too much in BwB.

“We also played volleyball and many of the same players in this photo participated, too.

“I remember we played older boys from Morgan Academy and beat them.“Happy days.”
