With the Premiership having their winter break, all the attention turns to the Championship and Friday night’s mouth-watering, top-of-the-table clash between Hibs and Dundee United at Easter Road.
It should be a cracking match under the lights in front of what could be a sell-out crowd and there is obviously a lot at stake for both sides.
Hibs will create a wee gap if they win while United can go top once again if they can triumph.
It is fair to say that the Premiership title race is a foregone conclusion now but things are really heating up in the Championship.
Friday night’s game is incredibly important but I don’t think it will be the defining moment of the season for either side.
Hibs started the campaign on fire but United pegged them back thanks to their incredible unbeaten run.
Of course, that came to a shuddering halt at Dumbarton on Saturday, a result which showed once again there are no such things as “easy” games in this league.
Ray McKinnon’s men will be absolutely determined to get back on the march once again following that result and there is no better way to do that than at the home of their biggest rivals in the league.
It will be interesting to see if United can strengthen in this transfer window as Hibs have already done so with the addition of Chris Humphrey and Kris Commons on loan from Celtic.
Commons will only get better with games under his belt. He showed what he can do when he scored a late winner against Falkirk at the weekend with a quality free-kick.
Hibs chief executive Leeann Dempster has said Lenny will have money to spend in January but I am not sure if United and their chairman Stephen Thompson have that luxury.
What is certain, is that the Tangerines have to keep a close eye on Commons and hope their own star man Tony Andreu is fit to play to hopefully make the difference – is should be a great game.
Celtic’s incredible run in domestic football continued at the weekend with the win over Rangers at Ibrox.
It is absolutely amazing what the Hoops are doing at the moment and someone is going to have to go some to stop their juggernaut.
Rangers did have the chance to draw the game when Kenny Miller hit the post but to be fair Celtic had loads of opportunities with home keeper Wes Foderingham producing some good saves to deny them.
The Celtic players along with manager Brendan Rodgers and his staff deserve enormous credit but the worrying thing for the rest of Scottish football is they look certain to strengthen in this window.
Special mention must also go to former Dundee United midfielder Stuart Armstrong.
He looks like a new signing for Celtic and has been outstanding playing in his preferred position.
I was on the bench as my side Arbroath could only secure a point at home against Montrose on Monday afternoon.
With league leaders Forfar also drawing at Elgin, the Angus derby was a missed opportunity for us.
I thought the two goalies Ricky Gomes and Jordan Millar did well but overall we were disappointing after being at the top of our game in the last few weeks.
Credit though to new Montrose boss Stewart Petrie for the job he is doing at the club and also to the fans of both sides with 1,731 at the game.
We are more than halfway through the season and we need to start to claw back that seven-point gap on Forfar.
Thankfully, we have a man with all the experience in the world in manager Dick Campbell to help us do just that.
Finally, a word or two about my good pal Barry Smith and the way he has started as boss at East Fife.
It is great to see him back in management in Methil and winning his first three games in charge. Long may it continue.
