So Gordon Strachan and Scotland did part company after all but that leaves a big question unanswered.
Just what is the plan now?
There could be a quality manager hiding somewhere abroad whom the SFA can afford to recruit but I can’t think of one.
You see someone like Carlo Ancelotti leave Bayern Munich but I’m not sure any Scotland fan will think he is a realistic option for our team given the finances that would be involved in tempting the Italian to Hampden.
I know the Republic of Ireland went down that road with Giovanni Trapattoni (Irish businessman Denis O’Brien paid roughly half of the Italian’s annual salary of 1.2 million Euros) but it is hard to see that happening here.
Of course, Davie Moyes has been mentioned as the leading Scots-born contender but would he really be that different to Strachan?
Listen, Moyes has had something in the past or he would not have been appointed manager of Manchester United but I’m not sure his arrival would excite the fans.
So where do we go from here?
Speaking of Scotland, it was interesting to hear Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers talk up Dundee central defender Jack Hendry’s chances of future international honours.
It should be seen as a compliment to the whole club that Rodgers chose to discuss an opposition player after his own team had just won the game.
My view is that it is early days yet and Hendry could be doing with a full season at Dens behind him before thinking about a possible Scotland call-up.
I like the look of him, though, and he is one to watch along with Kerr Waddell and one or two others.
As for another talented young player, Cammy Kerr, I am backing him to cope with being out of the team as professionally as he has dealt with being in the side.
I am quite sure that Cammy will get his chance again before too long.
He is a clever, mature young lad who will keep his head down and work hard in training until his opportunity comes along.
Meanwhile, I see that Dundee and the 10 other Premiership clubs are now better off to the tune of £370,000 each thanks to Celtic’s European involvement.
That is a major boost going into the winter months and could mean a player or two for a side when the January transfer window opens.
