Striking Dundee University lecturers used the second day of national industrial action to focus attention upon the gender pay gap.
Members of the University and College Union (UCU) are at war with the Universities and Colleges Employers’ Association (UCEA) over a 1% pay rise and conditions.
The union noted that, since the Equal Pay Act in 1970, women workers continue to face a large, negative disparity in pay compared with their male counterparts.
The union said that despite an equal pay audit taking place in both 2014 and 2016, there had been “no discernible reduction in the gender pay gap evident to date”.
Dundee’s gender pay gap for staff in the academic and academic related grades is said to amount to 13.6%.
The Dundee University UCU branch’s Sharon Sweeney said: “UCU has developed a toolkit for members called Rate for the Job.
“Staff can compare their salary to that of someone of the opposite gender, in a similar role.
“In a way, I am one of the lucky ones, as my salary is £1000 less than that for a man carrying out a role similar to mine.
“For some, this disparity could be as much as £6000. In 2016, this is unacceptable and all employers should work towards one rate for one job.”
