While the rest of the world is glued to Wimbledon, three St Andrews students have given up their summer to coach aspiring tennis players in Zambia.
The students, all members of the university tennis club, launched the new volunteer project which involved coaching players at the Olympic Youth Development Centre in Lusaka.
The programme saw Anna Shackleton, Regi Monroe and Ridwan Pfluger training up to 100 Zambians over the past four weeks, alongside the country’s top tennis player, Edgar Kazembe.
The idea behind the programme grew from a conference attended by director of sport at St Andrews Stephen Stewart and marketing and business development manager Fergus Knight.
Stephen said: “The tennis volunteering project in Lusaka is a new and exciting venture for Saints Sport and builds on our longstanding work in Zambia as part of the Wallace Group.”
The university is developing one of the most advanced student tennis programmes in Scotland, offering student athletes a range of coaching, training and support opportunities
Saints Sport also provides secondary school tennis coaching and Saturday night sessions for local teenagers.
