St Andrews academics behind a revolutionary diagnostic tool which could save the sight of millions are to give a TED-style talk.
The team behind the Arclight ophthalmoscope and otoscope, a handheld solar powered tool which can diagnose early signs of treatable blindness and deafness, will give a TEDx presentation at the Byre Theatre in St Andrews this Sunday.
TED Talks have involved expert speakers on education, business, science, tech and creativity, with the videos hosted on the website ted.com spreading ideas throughout the world.
The St Andrews event takes place between 10am and 4pm, with tickets available from the Byre box office.
Dr Martin Anderson, an ophthalmologist and honorary research fellow with the global health team at the University of St Andrews, will discuss what inspired the Arclight and how it was developed.
It has already been distributed to countries around the world, enabling healthcare workers to perform comprehensive eye and ear examinations for the first time.
The talk is part of the 6th TEDx event organised a committee of students.
Among the other speakers are Iraq veteran Adnan Sarwar who now works as a journalist and TV presenter and Jeff Wilson, a wildlife film director and documentary photographer who has spent the last 17 years capturing untold stories from the wild for the BBC, Discovery Channel, Netflix and Disney.
In addition, St Andrews students Fiona Cooper and Rachel Martinez Hall, who won the TEDx St Andrews student speaker competition, will speak on participating in sport as a woman, and hidden homelessness.
