A former St Andrews University lecturer has launched a campaign to raise money for children in Malawi by selling prints of his V&A photographs.
Dr Colin Nicol, a former lecturer in pharmacology, took up photography after retiring five years ago and is keen to put his talents to good use.
He is hoping to use the new V&A’s popularity to raise money for the Malawian Chimwemwe Children’s Centre, which helps children and families affected by AIDS.
Dr Nicol said: “My wife and I both visited Malawi as part of our work in St Andrews Medical School.
“We were out there setting up a programme to improve the teaching and the quality of medical school graduates.
“My wife had a chance meeting with the man who set up the Chimwemwe Children’s Centre and was interested in his work.
“Over the year we have been involved with fundraising for the charity, so this is now a continuation of that.”
Dr Nicol said he has been interested in photography for a long time, but it had taken him a while to catch up with advances in technology.
He added: “When I first started out everything was analogue and we had to develop photos in a dark room.
“I then didn’t have time to pursue photography much, and when I took it up again it was totally different with the digital technology.
“It’s been a learning curve but I’ve enjoyed it, and now with the V&A opening there’s a lot there to capture.
“If people want to order prints from me, or to use my images for any commercial purpose, then the proceeds would go to the charity.
“If anybody has interest in this, then I would like them to get in touch and we can discuss options.”
