Parents have touted a plan to postpone closing a Perthshire primary school to help strengthen social distancing practices when pupils return to the classroom.
Councillors voted to shut down Abernyte Primary School in the Carse of Gowrie a year ago and although a court case is being fought to save the school, youngsters who attended Abernyte were set to start at Inchture after the summer holidays.
Parent council boss Gerard McGoldrick believes delaying the closure by a year could help protect parents, staff and pupils.
He said: “Would you want to close a little school and put the kids into a quite full school?
“Social distancing will need to be in place for some time and it seems entirely sensible. There’re a lot of elderly people here.
“Abernyte is an asset to help other schools. It’s reasonable to extend for a year for less crowding issues.”
Perth and Kinross Council say it will follow Scottish Government advice on phasing pupils back into the classroom.
A spokesperson said: “The Scottish Government have established the C19 Education Recovery group which is chaired by the Deputy First Minister.
“Perth and Kinross Council will base its plans for the re-opening of schools on the government guidance that this group will produce.”
