Consultation on plans to close Law Nursery School in Dundee will start next week.
From Monday people will be able to have their say – although there are no viable options for the nursery’s continuation.
Law Nursery is due to close next June as the Catholic church is to sell the land it sits on.
Notice was served on Dundee City Council regarding the existing lease, with no offer for the local authority to purchase the land by the Diocese of Dunkeld.
The council confirmed there will be no job losses, with staff offered posts at other nurseries.
Potential options
The nursery has a capacity for 70 children, and 22 will remain until June 2023 after families were asked to make a choice.
A review of alternative sites in the area found no suitable alternative locations for the nursery.
The council said there is space at other city nurseries for those children who do or would attend Law Nursery in future.
A formal consultation has to be carried out by Dundee City Council as there is a legal requirement to do so under the terms of the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010.
Local authorities are required to conduct consultation when there is a proposal to close a school or nursery.
Children and family service convener Councillor Stewart Hunter said: “We have been working closely with the Diocese during this time.
“I would encourage as many people as possible to take part in the consultation.
“Their views will inform a vital part of the process.
“Although Law Nursery has provided a good environment for early learning for many years, there is not a suitable location where we can replace it.”
Consultation will include a public meeting at the nursery on November 24 at 6pm, with a final decision on closure to be made in April.
