Parents ignored Dundee’s newest school traffic ban at Coldside Campus on its first day.
Part-time restrictions came into force today outside the campus to protect pupils of Rosebank Primary and Our Lady’s RC Primary as they arrive and leave.
But lots of cars continued to pass through the area at home time, with many drivers stopping on double yellow lines in one of the restricted areas – Ann Street – as they waited to pick up children.
One furious gran said parents shrugged their shoulders when she challenged them for flouting the ban.
A week ago similar restrictions were brought in at North East Campus in Dundee and more will follow at three other city schools over the next three weeks.
When and where is traffic banned at Coldside Campus?
At Coldside Campus driving in Ann Street, Whistlers Way, Nelson Street, Annan Terrace and Kidd Street is now prohibited on school days from 8.30am to 9.15am and 3pm to 3.30pm when children are arriving and leaving.
Emergency vehicles and contracted taxis for school transport are exempt, but all other motorists could be penalised by police for breaches.
What happened at Coldside Campus on Monday afternoon?
Many cars continued to drive into and out of the streets where the driving ban is now in force at home time.
Several parked on double yellow lines in Ann Street.
But unlike at North East Campus last Monday, there were no police there to stop drivers and remind them they should no longer be driving in streets where part-time restrictions now apply.
Dolina Forrest, 70, who was picking up her grandchildren from the campus, said: “I am absolutely flaming.
“I spoke to three parents this afternoon to tell them they should not be parking here and they just shrugged their shoulders.
“They are parking in a street right outside a school entrance where there are now restrictions and there are no police or traffic wardens to stop them.”
Another said: “The cars are still coming into the streets where they are not supposed to.
“The council is going to have to put barriers in to stop them. Clearly the new restrictions aren’t working.”
Another said: “Parents are going to just park somewhere else so all it is doing is moving the problem onto another street.
“There should be a designated parking area where parents can go to pick up and drop off their kids.”
When do driving bans start at other Dundee schools?
A pedestrian zone at Forthill Primary School came into force in 2013, and more recently Safer School Streets – as the restrictions are known – have been introduced at Fintry and St Mary’s primary schools.
They will come into force at three more Dundee schools over the next three weeks.
From next week, part-time driving bans will be introduced at:
- St Andrew’s RC Primary School on November 21
- Downfield Primary School on November 28
- Craigiebarns Primary School on December 5.
