Primary school children at Breadalbane Academy are running a bag-selling enterprise – and business is booming.
The Aberfeldy school’s P7 class designed and produced 800 hessian bags which they are selling in shops around the Perthshire town and in school.
Breadalbane Snazzy Bags are close to selling out, and the pupils plan to spend some of the proceeds on a school trip as a reward for their hard work.
We visited the school find out more about the endeavour, and how children have taken on roles including advertising representatives, market researchers and managers to ensure their business runs like clockwork.
While we were there the distribution team was hard at work ensuring orders were fulfilled and the finance team was keeping a track of income and expenditure in an Excel spreadsheet.
They are doing their jobs as well as any adults would in the industry.”
Teacher Maree Grant
Class teacher Maree Grant said: “They have done an incredible job and been extremely efficient. They are doing their jobs as well as any adults would in the industry.
“They have worked really well together and each team has been pivotal to the success of the business.”
Hundreds snap up Snazzy Bags
The class began the enterprise by securing a loan from school funds and each pupil applied for different jobs.
They ran a whole-school competition to design illustrations for the bags of local landmarks like Wade’s Bridge and Aberfeldy Distillery.
Parents were interviewed to determine what size of bag would be most popular and appropriate price points.
Posters and an iMovie were made to publicise the product and local businesses contacted to secure sales outlets.
Pupil Ally Campbell told us 12 traders are stocking the bags.
She said: “We are very thankful for these businesses who have agreed to sell our bags, we have sold nearly 600.
“We’re hoping to sell all of them before Christmas.”
Breadalbane’s Snazzy Bags are available from the school library, several local shops and will be sold at a Christmas market in Aberfeldy on Saturday.
