Calling all Big Country fans – for the third year running, the legendary Scottish rocksters will be playing a New Year gig at Pj Molloys in Dunfermline, the band’s hometown – guitar playing founder members Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson both hailed from the Fife town.
The band broke massively worldwide with the release of the album’s classic singles Fields Of Fire, Chance and signature song In A Big Country, which went on to become huge worldwide hits, selling more than two million copies.
After the tragic death of lead singer Stuart Adamson in 2001, the remaining three members had no real thoughts of performing as Big Country again but re-united in 2007 to celebrate the band’s 25th anniversary. “It wasn’t a come-back… it was just the three of us having fun, as friends and as a band, the only remaining original member.
He explains what the audience at Pj Molloys can expect tonight: “It’s 30 years since our third album The Seer came out and we’ll be playing the album in its entirety – all 10 tracks – for the first time,” he says.
“Then we’ll play some of our big hits at the end including Fields of Fire, Chance, Wonderland and In a Big Country,” he continues.
“We try to make the songs sound exactly the way we originally recorded them.”
The band play full electric and it is one of the smallest gigs they do all year, which just adds to the intimate feel of the evening.
Bruce promises to keep the banter up throughout the set and provide some great stories for fans of all ages, and from all over the UK and beyond.
“There’s a real mix of ages,” he explains. “There’re the people who have followed us since we began in 1981, and then there are a whole lot of new younger fans too.
“It’s going to be good fun and hopefully everyone will join in and sing along.”
Bruce has a personal reason for looking forward to playing in his hometown: “It’ll be great at the end of the night just to jump in a taxi and head 10 minutes down the road to my house and sleep in my own bed,” he smiles.
“Although we don’t go away touring for six weeks at a time the way we used to, we still tour at weekends and there’s still a lot of travelling involved, so this will be great!”
Calum Miller of Pj Molloys says: “It’s great that the band have taken to coming and doing this show annually.
“It’s great we can put on their New Year party. Fans travel from all over the world and it really is a great show.
“We are sure the band will hang about after the show and we will have a real good party all night.”
