Light on Dumyat, published by Rowan Tree Publishing, priced £7.99
First published in 1980, this children’s classic has been used widely in schools both in the UK, Australia and the United States, and due to demand, a brand new illustrated edition has just come out.
The first book in a series of four it introduces the key characters, Gavin and the Stewart children. Set in central Scotland, Gavin is on holiday from London when he meets the three Stewart children and is desperate to join their ‘clan’. To do so he has to pass a series of tests. The three redoubtable Stewarts teach Gavin about the ancient ways of the Clans, how to survive outdoors and the four join forces against a ruthless criminal gang.
This classic tale of adventure, friendship and courage was apparently influenced by the author’s childhood. Aimed at 7–11 year olds, there are no phones or iPads, just four resourceful children roaming free, having adventures and being at one with their environment.
The second The White Stag Adventure will be published in spring next year, followed by The Day the Mountain Moves and Jewels on the Move in 2018.
Rennie McOwan lives in Stirling and his novels and non-fiction titles have been used widely in primary and secondary schools.
