“Jimi Hendrix of the pipes” heads to Dundee

Virtuoso piper and multi-instrumentalist Fred Morrison in action.

Dubbed the “Jimi Hendrix of the pipes”, Fred Morrison is famed for his expressive style of playing, rooted in the Gaelic traditions of his father’s native South Uist.

Fred, from Glasgow, performs the final night of his Scottish Winter Tour at Dundee’s Hannah Maclure Centre on December 10.

Starting with a sell-out performance in Skye, Fred has spent 18 nights playing concert halls, arts centres and village halls the length and breadth of the country.

Although his first-love instrument remains the great Highland bagpipes, over the years his mastery has expanded to encompass whistles, Scottish smallpipes, or reelpipes – Morrison being a pivotal populariser of this once-rare variety – and Irish uilleann pipes.

He has featured in the seminal Scottish bands Clan Alba and Capercaillie and and is also a record-breaking champion on the competitive piping circuit.

The gig starts at 7pm.
