A pair of exhibitions featuring a selection of works from Dundee’s fine art collection are to open in The McManus this weekend.
Sense of Place, which showcases landscapes by Scottish artists, and Out of the Frame, which examines the nation’s abstract art, will both open on Friday.
The landscape collection features work by the Glasgow Boys, who are described as pioneers for breaking out of the studio and into the outdoors to create their art – allowing them to capture the nuanced effects of light and weather.
The exhibition tracks the strong tradition of landscape painting through the 20th century, with work by the Scottish Colourists, William McCance, and William Johnstone.
The highly detailed panoramic landscapes of McIntosh Patrick also make an appearance, accompanied by contemporary artist Graeme Todd, with creations which border on abstraction.
Out of the Frame further examines abstract work, and particularly how Scottish artists have experimented and engaged with the form. Turning their backs on realistic representation, they focus instead on colour, shape, form and gestural marks.
The exhibition includes the city’s latest fine art acquisition in the shape of three abstract works by Victoria Morton.
Bob Duncan, chair of Leisure & Culture Dundee, said: “A focus on Scottish paintings is the latest in a series of annual displays which explore different areas of the city’s exceptional art collection. Some of Scotland’s greatest artists from the late nineteenth century up to the present day will be represented in two spectacular exhibitions.”
The exhibitions are open from Friday November 4 and admission is free. ‘Sense of Place’ extends until Autumn 2017, ‘Out of the Frame’ runs until Sunday 23 April 2017.
