An author and his loyal companion who followed in the footsteps of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s arduous escape of 1746 dropped into Perth Museum and Art Gallery to learn more about the Jacobite Prince.

Gregor Ewing, along with border collie Meg, retraced the Prince’s epic 530 mile walk through remote wilderness, hidden glens, modern day roads and uninhabited islands.

In his book he tells the Prince’s story alongside the trials of his own present day journey, while reflecting on the plight of the highlanders who, despite everything, loyally protected their rightful prince.

The author’s love of history and the landscape in which he travels shines through in this modern day adventure.

A local audience will learn a bit more about the book as the pair are appearing at Loch Leven Library in Kinross as part of Culture Perth and Kinross’ Book Week Scotland events.

Charlie, Meg and Me: an illustrated talk with Gregor Ewing will take place on Friday November 25 at 7.30pm.

Tickets are free and available online at www.pkc.gov.uk/library or by telephoning 01577 867205.

On his visit to Perth Museum and Art Gallery, curator JP Reid allowed Gregor to view some of the artefacts in the Gifts for a Jacobite Prince exhibition.

“It was really kind of the team at Perth Museum and Art Gallery to allow me to see the collection up close,” said the author.

“It’s astonishing to think that some of the items he would have carried with him on that journey are now on view for the public to see in Perth.”

Helen Smout, chief executive of Culture Perth and Kinross said: “We were delighted to welcome Gregor  and to show him the Gifts for a Jacobite Prince exhibition.

“Book Week Scotland is about bringing books to life and Gregor and Meg’s journey in Bonnie Prince Charlie’s footsteps can be really brought to life with a trip to the museum to see exactly what the Prince would have carried with him on the very same journey.”

Gifts for a Jacobite Prince is on display at Perth Museum and Art Gallery until February 25 next year.
