A famous monument of Dundee’s past will be the subject of a new display at the McManus gallery. The Royal Arch display will feature the ‘three ages’ of the arch – wooden, stone and cardboard. Artwork will be on the walls and a marble plaque that survived the demolition of the arch will be on show on the wall beneath the Royal Arch clock. The monumental archway formerly stood over the access to the pier between Earl Grey Dock and King William IV Dock on Dundee’s waterfront. Many lament its loss, and there have even been petitions to have it rebuilt as a feature of the city’s new waterfront. In 2016 its place in the hearts of Dundonians was marked with a community effort to rebuild the arch in cardboard, before it was brought crashing to the ground in a spectacular family event at the new Slessor Gardens. The new exhibition will open on Saturday February 17.
