A winter visit to Craigtoun Country Park is a great way to blow off the cobwebs. The park, which has been lovingly restored by the Friends of Craigtoun over the last few years offers beautiful walks, an adventure playground, zipline and Fairy Glen.
There is free to access all year round with paid-for rides adding to the fun during the school holidays and at weekends.
We were delighted to discover that even though the park itself was quiet, the cafe is currently open Wednesday to Sunday (open daily from Easter to October.)
Set in the existing prefabricated building, the cafe isn’t going to win any design prizes either inside or out anytime soon.
The basic design, however, is more than made up for by the friendly service and tasty lunch. The cafe is cosy inside, is accessible for wheelchairs and prams and a new decking area outside is a lovely spot on sunny days.
Inside, a toddler play area and train set are great for keeping wriggly little people entertained.
With a squad of hungry troops in tow, I ordered soup and a roll (£2.60) for myself and three paninis (£2.50-£3) for the children to share.
There is an impressively wide range of options available in the cafe, from meal boxes and hot food options for the kids to jacket potatoes, burgers and salad bowls.
A wide range of soft drinks and ice lollies are also on offer and, in high season, a large selection of scooping ice cream.
We ordered our food at the counter and it was brought to our table promptly. The chicken, chorizo and cheese and ham and cheese paninis were tasty and generously-filled and came with a small side salad.
The large bowl of homemade lentil soup was delicious and just the thing for a chilly January day.
We will certainly be back to enjoy both the park and the tasty, well-priced food and friendly service in the cafe.
