“Balhousie Care Group is such a supportive company”
Cheryl Roy, Home Manager at Balhousie Antiquary care home in Arbroath, entered management from a project-based role with Head Office.
A former manager with Bank of Scotland in Dundee, Cheryl was PA to Balhousie Chairman Tony Banks before going on to support the group’s operations team and in various project-based roles.
A stint at Balhousie’s home in Aboyne followed, where she deputised for the manager and learned the day-to-day running of a care home.
She also learned what is at the heart of Balhousie: involving residents in decision-making, from menus to activities. “After all, this is their home,” says Cheryl, who has been with Balhousie now for 11 years.
Cheryl joined Balhousie Antiquary in April 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic was taking hold countrywide.
Now holding an SVQ4 in Management, she has seen the team through massive change, including visitor lockdowns, changing infection and prevention control guidelines and, currently, recruitment challenges.
Cheryl is proud of how the staff have pulled together during such a challenging time. “The staff are really passionate about their residents and their home. They take pride in Balhousie Antiquary. I’m so proud of how they kept residents’ spirits high throughout the care home lockdowns.”
Now that Antiquary is open again to relatives and events, the care home is building links again with the community and spreading the word about not just its function as a care home, but as a local employer.
One of Balhousie Care’s core corporate values is ‘passion’ and that is something Cheryl has in abundance.
“I’ve always been really passionate about Balhousie. It’s such a supportive company and there’s never anything that’s any bother to anybody.”
