Wee Mexico in Dundee is the perfect pit stop for a quick bite to eat at lunch, and even makes for a great place to pick up a late night snack.
The Mexican street food eatery has proven a staple of the city’s foodie scene for years now, and although I’ve lived in Dundee the whole time it has been open, I’ve somehow not found myself venturing there until now.
The building that Wee Mexico is based is actually where the original Grand Theft Auto game was developed, for those who are fans of the Rockstar North game.
Eager to try out a range of dishes on their menu, I headed down to Nethergate to grab a bite to eat.
The first thing you’ll notice from the outside is the bright blue exterior, although the bins situated out front distracted from its beauty a bit.
However, after entering Wee Mexico I was asked to fill out my order on a screen, with the option to choose my filling type for each dish clearly earmarked. There were plenty of opportunities to customise my dishes. which I really enjoyed, meaning those with dietaries don’t have to worry as much.
All of their food is being halal so I really was spoiled for choice. I ended up ordering four different dishes to review with a few standing out more than others.
The order at Wee Mexico
Verdict: King chicken burrito
I decided to have shredded chicken in my king burrito which came wrapped in foil to ensure the food stayed warm.
Biting into it, I found the chicken as well as spicy rice, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes.
The wrap was very soft and not too thick for the filling, and there were plenty of ingredients inside the wrap I found rather filling.
The chicken itself didn’t really have much flavour but the spicy tomato really added a punch to the offering.
I felt the grated cheese created lumps in the wrap as it wasn’t really melted as such, but it was packed, so I can’t fault its value.
However, it was rather dry so I recommend some sort of sauce to help wash it down.

Verdict: Muchos nachos
Next up we had the muchos nachos – nachos loaded with cheese sauce, sour cream, spring onion and tomatoes.
It came with an extra pot of salsa which I appreciated as sometimes it is good to be able to add your own toppings.
The tortilla crisps remained crispy despite having so many toppings which I absolutely loved, and there was ample cheese sauce and sour cream.
Adding the salsa totally elevated this dish, and the mixture of the sour cream and tomato flavour – along with the sharpness of the spring onions – made this dish utterly delicious.
I think the portion size was massive and they could easily be a meal on their own.

Verdict: Cheese fries
This was the dish that actually surprised me most in terms of flavour due to the initial offering not looking all that exciting.
I watched as the staff member placed the grated cheddar on top of the chips, which then melted with the steam inside the closed box.
Although this was great, the chips themselves were a bit too soft for my liking and I would have preferred them crispier.
They had an extra seasoning on top which turned out to be Cajun, and this really added to their tasty flavour. This took the chips from being an everyday dish to something I would definitely order again.

Verdict: Chilli beef stacker tacos
Last but not least is the stacker tacos. I chose to have a chilli beef filling just to try another one of their meat offerings.
The dish is a hard taco served inside a soft taco, which then has sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes and the filling of your choice added to it.
This was the most expensive dish, but it came with three tacos meaning it was quite a bit eat and something that would definitely satisfy me for lunch.
It was my favourite overall with the chilli beef being seasoned and cooked with the spices to perfection.
The tacos had the perfect amount of sauce and veg inside, but I felt the added hard taco inside the soft taco didn’t add anything to the dish.
The hard taco was soft by the time I tried it, and so the idea I had of a soft and hard taco crunching together all in one bite didn’t happen
Next time I order this dish I’ll get the hard taco instead of the stacker.
