All this week, the pages of The Courier will be filled with a colourful celebration of Courier Country’s dads ahead of Father’s Day. Nora McElhone found out more about some kids who didn’t want to miss out on the fun.
The Draw Your Dad project invited children in primaries 3 and 4 to draw a picture of their dads and write a little message to them for Father’s Day. However, the staff at Rimbleton Primary School in Glenrothes loved the idea of the project so much that they got their P1 and P2 pupils involved too.
When a beautiful bundle of their colourful pictures arrived at the Draw Your Dad desk we couldn’t resist sharing some of them ahead of the official showcase of pictures by primary 3 and 4 children next week.
Mrs Gemma Duguid teaches the P1/P2 class at Rimbleton and was keen to get the kids involved in working on a topic that they could really relate to. “It was a great opportunity to discuss positive male role models with the children,” she said, “we talked about it during circle time and every child had the chance to share a story about their dad. It was really lovely to hear some of the stories they told about dads as well as the grandparents and uncles who are very much male role models in their lives.”
The Courier team thoroughly enjoyed looking through the pictures and messages from the children and marketing executive Sharon Methven said, “the children were obviously keen to produce some drawings and show their creative flair and although we couldn’t use them in the official supplements, we wanted to highlight their efforts.”
The collection of images and messages reveals a group of kids who idolise their dads and gives us an insight into the special relationship between dads, sons and daughters. Dads take them swimming, take them to the park and – most importantly – are superheroes in the eyes of the five and six-year-old. And with a trial run firmly under their belts, we are looking forward to seeing the children’s entries when they hit P3 next year!
All of the primary 3 and 4 submissions to the Draw Your Dad promotion will appear in print this week – look out for some fantastic drawings from school children from all over Courier Country in a series of special supplements from Monday June 13.
