Dundee’s Hayley Scanlan swapped fashion design for fundraising, along with her sister Holly, to support their friend’s mum.
The sisters walked the West Highland Way raising money for the MacMillan day care unit at Arbroath Infirmary.
This week they handed over a large cheque to the facility, showing their support for family friend Caryn Brannon who has been fighting cancer for over a decade.
The fundraising duo took on the 96 mile journey over seven days.
Holly explained why they wanted to honour Caryn by raising funds.
Fashion to fundraising
“She has been fighting cancer with grace, pride and ferocity for a number of years.
“Her strength and resilience make her one of a kind, we hope to make her and her family proud with our challenge.
“We want them to know that we are with them every step of the way.”
Caryn, a former DC Thomson employee, says it’s “amazing” the sisters decided to fundraise and show support for the day care unit, which she attends regularly.
“Our two daughters Laura and Rachel went to school at St John’s RC High School with Hayley and Holly.
“They’ve all kept in touch and it means a lot that they decided to do this.
“It’s amazing, they’ve done really well.”
Caryn, 59, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010.
At the time, she underwent chemotherapy and a mastectomy.
But unfortunately, the cancer was to return five years later.
Caryn’s husband Anton explains: “At that time we found out it had come back and had metastasized into her liver, lungs and bones.”
Then earlier on this year, Caryn was diagnosed with another type cancer and had to travel to Aberdeen for a hysterectomy.
She now receives treatment regularly at the day care unit.
Special event
In a special event held at the unit this week, Hayley and Holly handed over a cheque for £3300 they raised.
Caryn adds: “It was a really good day.
“We got out into the garden and we were all laughing.
“When we were getting our pictures taken I joked that the three of us look like models!”
Anton adds: “Although Caryn’s drug therapy is working well, she does get severe side effects, including a lot of fatigue.
“So it was brilliant to see her beaming and on a high.”
