Bad news for Andy Murray on the eve of Wimbledon.
The Dunblane tennis star was defeated by John McEnroe, who turned out to be his fastest opponent yet.
Murray took on a 200mph Jaguar F-Type SVR at Thruxton Motorsports Centre in an unusual test of skill, attempting to hit a target attached to the back of the supercar as it zoomed around the track.
He scored 15 points if he hit the target, with Jaguar scoring 15 if he missed. The game went to deuce before the car secured advantage then game, set and match.
Afterwards, the stunt driver removed his helmet to reveal seven-time slam winner McEnroe – to Murray’s chagrin.
The Scot said: “Trying to find an inch perfect serve at 130mph against the top players in the world is tough enough but hitting a target racing past you at 160mph was the toughest and most unique match I’ve had.”
A delighted McEnroe crowed: “I wasn’t going easy on Andy. You can see from his reaction when he realised it was me. It was priceless. I’ve seen him react badly before but nothing quite like that.”
Murray expects to fare better at Wimbledon, which begins on Monday. He added: “I have played my best ever tennis on clay this year and my form is as good now as it has been over the last couple of years.
“Wimbledon is the one tournament that every tennis player wants to win. There’s more competition for every point and the pressure is more intense during these two weeks than at any other Grand Slam. I’m confident I’ve got a great chance.”
Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo has revealed its all-new Giulia Quadrifoglio will cost from £59,000 when it goes on sale in the UK shortly.
Powered by a new 2.9-litre bi-turbo V6 engine, it has 510bhp, does the 0-62mph dash in 3.9 seconds and goes on to a top speed of around 190mph.
