Sport utility vehicles – or SUVs – are the model of choice for the buying public and have been for quite a few years now.
But for those of us who like their cars with a bit of power under the bonnet, pickings are relatively thin. So for driving enthusiasts it’s welcome news that BMW outfitter Alpina has stepped in with an SUV that rivals Porsches for off-the-line quickness.
Based on BMW’s X3, Alpina has added its trademark mechanical and visual upgrades to bring a fresh offering in the performance SUV market. Powering it is a reworked version of BMW’s 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine, here delivering 328bhp and 700Nm of torque. It’s paired to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and is capable of taking the XD3 from 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds before hitting a top speed of 158mph.
The engine isn’t the only part to receive mechanical fettling, though. Power is sent to all four wheels through an Alpina-developed torque distribution system, which the manufacturer says “guarantees maximum traction, neutral driving dynamics and high levels of safety”, while the addition of a rear limited-slip differential and sports suspension aids cornering stability.
As for the look of the XD3, Alpina has added a distinctive body kit and 20-inch alloy wheels to the SUV to further distinguish it as one of its creations. Full details of equipment on the Alpina XD3, along with pricing and delivery dates, will be revealed later this year. The is currently making its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
Founded in 1965, Alpina works closely with BMW in developing its vehicles. A large part of the production takes place in the latter’s factories before the cars are sent to the former for finishing touches. The low-volume manufacturer sells fewer than 100 cars annually in the UK. Despite seeming to the untrained eye to be little more than a modifier of BMW cars, it’s actually recognised as a separate vehicle manufacturer by the German Ministry of Transport.
